5 Great Features About Selling Digital Goods on Creative Market

If you’ve been following the blog here, you would know that Pixel Oak recently announced that it will also be selling digital products on Creative Market. It’s been a great experience so far and I’d like to highlight some things I really like about this marketplace.

1. Great Commission Rate
Creative Market as far as I can tell has the best commission rate for sellers out of the markets that are currently out there. It also pays the credit card processing fees on it’s side and doesn’t tack this fee to your commission, pretty nice.

2. Flexible Pricing
In contrast to alot of other marketplaces, Creative Market let’s you set your own prices and you can also change them at will. Creating and managing promotions is much simpler and quicker this way.

3. No Exclusivity Lock-In
At Creative Market there is no exclusivity lock-in. Want to publish your items on other markets? No problem, you’re not going to take a hit on your commission. I personally hope this is a policy that will be adopted by other markets in the future, it really makes things simple and easy.

4. Instant Publishing & Editing
Publishing items on Creative Market is an instantaneous process, there’s is no review and approval process. This is really nice for sellers who want to move fast and want to time their releases.

5. Simplicity
Between it’s SimpleLicence and commission rate, Creative Market has opted to make things really simple and understandable for sellers which I believe will be a market differentiator for them. As more and more sellers jump on board I believe this method of working with sellers will be a no-brainer.

If you are thinking about jumping into selling digital design assets I would highly encourage you to check out Creative Market. It’s a young marketplace that has a creative’s first attitude that I believe will set it apart from other sellers.

New Buying Options!

I’ve decided to provide new buying options for all Pixel Oak digital products starting in 2013. This will be an experiment which I hope will have good results. As more digital goods markets bubble up, it’s my intention to maximize the options for buyers and make purchasing Pixel Oak products as easy and comfortable as possible. So starting now you’ll have the following options in terms of buying our products: Gumroad, Creative Market, WrapBootstrap and GraphicRiver. I’ve also updated our previous posts with Gumroad links if you would like purchase directly from Pixel Oak.

6 Features to put Sketch 2 on your list of Photoshop alternatives

Sketch 2It’s safe to say that user interface designers have been looking for Photoshop alternatives for a very long time  for a variety of reasons and in my opinion it appears we have a viable candidate on our hands with Sketch 2. After spending over a month working with this application I wanted to post some thoughts on some of the best features that I think might make the switch from Photoshop a little more compelling for you.

Inspector

Sketch 2 InspectorThis is possibly the best feature of Sketch. The inspector gives  you instant access and control to object dimensions, fill and border colors, effects and object positioning coordinates. It’s really handy to have all this control centralized in one place. In most other apps you’ll have to jump around to various parts of the app to work in these areas.

Multiple Fills

A really nice and simple way to combine semi-transparent fills and gradients for the common designer. Illustrator has gradient meshes yes, but you really have to spend time with it to learn how it works, Sketch 2 makes it simple.

Non-destructive boolean operations

I have to admit at first I didn’t like this feature, but after a while it really grew on me. Every boolean operation in Sketch is non-destructive which means you can make subtle tweaks and changes to the shape even after it’s been modified.

Multiple Point Selection

Select multiple points within a shape by holding down shift and selecting the nodes, then drag with your mouse or use your arrow keys to change the shape of the object, this can be a real time saver.

Infinite Canvas

Sketch’s canvas is infinite in size which means you don’t have to worry about height and width dimensions when you create a new document, one less piece of user experience clutter in my opinion, you only worry about your object and slice sizes. If this shift in thinking makes you uncomfortable, Sketch also has what they call “artboards” which are fixed areas within the canvas that can give you specific dimensions to work within.

Linked Styles

A great feature about Sketch is it’s ability to link styles on objects. A great example would be if you were designing a long form and wanted to update the look of the multiple text fields,  you could simple link them all together and when the styling on one field changed, every other field which change instantly as well, this is a nice little time saver.

Note: Sketch 2 still has some bugs, a big noticeable one is what one user has called the “scale object distortion bug” , but there seems to be regular updates to the app and the developers are pretty responsive in the forums, so I feel pretty confident they will eventually get fixed.

Fol.io wants to make it super easy for you to sell your digital goods

Today I found a new entry into the digital goods marketplace, Fol.io. Fol.io’s focus seems to be ease of use. They want to make it super simple for designers to get their goods up online. They provide sellers an app that will run in the menu bar providing the ability to drag and drop marketplace assets. We’ll have to see if this resonates with designers or not, but one potential feature that could be really nice is instant access to sales information. There isn’t much information on their site as they are currently in a private beta, but if you’re curious to you can sign up here.
